Advanced Equine Sports Massage

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of eliciting a response.  In the case of equine: an increase in both lymphatic and blood circulation soothe & calm, or stimulate the nervous system, increase range of motions, increase the suppleness and mobility , and relax or stimulate musculature.

The beneficial effects of massage for the horse, especially the working sport horse are infinite.

The #1 effect of massage is increased circulation, which improves numerous internal systems.

The #2 effect of massage is the profound effect it has on the nervous system.

Muscle

Muscle

  • Increases nutrition to the muscle
  • Increased elimination of waste products
  • Stimulates muscle toe
  • Recovery time required for fatigued muscle is decreased
  • Muscle working efficiency is increased
  • Increased range of motion
  • Breaks down scar tissue

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular

  • increases circulation
  • Strengthens and slows the heart rate
  • decreases blood pressure
  • aids in cellular nutrition and more oxygen rich blood circulates over the cells

Lymphatic

Lymphatic

  • Lymphatic flow is directed towards the nearest lymph node when soft pressure is applied
  • Assists detoxification
  • Assists immunity
  • Reduces swelling in the limbs and any injured area (stocking up)

Respiratory

Respiratory

  • Increases local cellular metabolism
  • Increase O2 input and CO2 output
  • Increase elimination of mucus in the lungs
  • Increase mobility of the thorax
  • Expands bronchial tubes

Nervous

Nervous

  • Stimulate, promoting increased activity of the muscles, vessels and glands
  • Sedative, producing relief of pain
  • Promotes nutrition of nerves
  • Stimulate sympathetic for stimulating effects
  • Stimulate parasympathetic for relaxing effect
  • Stimulate the gut
  • Stimulate glands for increased hormonal release

Graston Technique

Graston Technique is instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a form of manual therapy that enables precise detection and treatment of fascial restrictions with less pain to the horse, less wear and tear on the practitioner’s hands, and better overall outcomes.

Graston Technique instruments assist the therapist by detecting and amplifying the tactile feel of soft tissue and restrictions to the hands, similar to how a stethoscope amplifies the sound of a heart beat. This decreases the treatment time, and increases the specificity of the tissue treatment.

Graston Technique Equine Therapy is a relatively new form of soft tissue treatment. I have found it particularly good for identifying and breaking up scar tissue. This therapy provides all the benefits of traditional massage but allows for very precise tissue manipulation with the assistance of the instruments. This is a great Prehab modality!

What does it do?

Graston Technique

For the horse the benefits are:

  • Provides all the benefits of traditional massage
  • Enables precise detection of and treatment of Fasciae restrictions with less pain to the patient
  • Allows for very precise tissue manipulation
  • Identifies and breaks up scar tissue
  • Less down time and less drug intervention
  • Quicker, improved outcomes with no pre-competition restrictions
  • A great PREHAB treatment

MagnaWave PEMF Treatment

Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) therapy uses technology to stimulate and exercise cells to help resolve cellular dysfunction and to support overall wellness. PEMF sends magnetic energy into the body. These energy waves work with the body’s natural magnetic field to improve healing. Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field Therapy has beneficial effects in alleviating equine tendon and ligament injuries, sore backs, sore stifles, chronic hock soreness, sore shoulders, non-union fractures, laminitis, founder, stone bruises, abscess, and non-healing wounds. PEMF encourages the body to recover naturally.

High powered PEMF for horses generate results at an accelerated rate and can be easily adjusted for optimal level of penetration. PEMF promotes cellular exercise, which increases circulation, blood oxygenation and helps the body to recover naturally, while reducing inflammation, and relieving pain.

What does it do?

MagnaWave PEMF

For the horse the benefits are:

  • Pain reduction
  • Reduction of Inflation
  • Relaxation
  • Expedites healing of wounds by increasing collagen production
  • Treats and improves the affect of Arthritis
  • Treats and improves soft tissue injury
  • Expedites the healing of fractures
  • Expedites the healing of hoof abscesses
  • Soothes and relaxes an anxious horse

For several years now horse owners have been aware of PEMF and its benefits. MagnaWave treatments are a drug free alternative to keep your horse in optimal health. Why not book an appointment for yourself as well as your animals to see its benefits!

Equine Sports Therapies primarily treats horses. However, I am a certified Magnawave Therapist for horses, humans, canine, feline, small animals and livestock. It is a very powerful tool for treating a variety of issues and has very few contraindications. MagnaWave is Health Canada approved and has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety and depression, incontinence, sinus issues, migraine and head ache, to identify a few.

Shockwave Treatment

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive therapy that is used by many disciplines to accelerate healing in various acute and/or chronic pain conditions. The main benefit of shock wave therapy is its ability to reduce pain rapidly and promote healing. It uses a powered handpiece that generates radial shockwaves. The focal accelerated force is transmitted to the site of the injury ( soft tissue) through a conducting gel.

The high pressured acoustic shockwaves travel through the skin to provide pain relief, enhance blood circulation and tissue repair. The shockwave machine emits short bursts which penetrates tissue and stimulates the cells that are responsible for healing.

What does it do?

Shockwave Treatment

For the horse the benefits are:

  • Treats Suspensory ligament tears, strains and avulsion fracture
  • Treats arthritis and joint pain
  • Treats bowed tendon
  • Treats splints
  • Treats bucked shins
  • Treats deep digital flexors tendon injuries, including those within the hoof
  • Treats navicular syndrome
  • Treats Ringbone
  • Treats vertebral spin pain/kissing spine and neck pain,
  • Muscle tears and strains
  • Ligament and tendon tears and strains
  • Improves large or chronic wounds in healing
  • Sacro-iliac conditions (hunters bump)
